Hegemony 3

Scar from The Lion King is a good example of hegemony because he gains the power of the throne and no lion wishes to follow him, they are required too because of their monarchy system's inheritence. Scar is a mean spirited and cruel king, only caring for himself with his hyenas doing his bidding, all the lions despise him and can't stand that he is their leader.

  1. I don't feel this is a very good example of hegemony. In this movie Scar is only the king because he killed his brother mufasa. Scar did this to become the king. When he does become king the rest of the lions hated him and didn't follow his orders. They didn't want him to be king. Hegemony is more of a leadership with followers who agree with whats going on and believe in the same things as the leader does. Also hegemony is done without violence and the way Scar became king was by causing violent acts to happen.

  2. I don't believe this is a very good example of hegemony. The only reason the lions follow scar is because he has an "army" of hyenas that will do anything scar says. So in a way the lions are being forced to abide by scars rule with the threat of brut force from the hyenas scar commands.

  3. I would agree that Scar is a great example of Hegemony in 2 ways.

    1. Scar, although using force to kill Mufasa, misinforms the other lions of the tragic event as an accident, and manipulates the lion's system of Monarchy to gain control, and even if the lions don';t want him to be king they believe it is still his right because of his blood relation to the former king. He does not gain this control by exerting his power or force he uses misinformation and false compassion, he does maintain it with he help of his hyenas.

    2. Scar has control of his hyena minions by using Hegemony. He definitely is not more powerful than them, as they outnumber him greatly. He uses the idea that hyenas are equals,if not better, than the lions and the promise of a better life for the hyenas if he were made king.

  4. Actually, the movie is a great example--but not Scar. Hegemony functions subtly because it convinces those not in power that the present system is normal and natural. What is the natural order of things in The Lion King? Mufasa as king. Thus, you see Zebras and OTHER PREY ANIMALS cheering his birth at the beginning of the film. Even though that lion will in all likelihood will eat their babies if given a chance, they are very very happy to put themselves on the chopping block since that is the "circle of life."
